Meryl Streep, Ben Affleck, Tom Hanks and Jennifer Aniston belong to more than 400 celebrities that have been collected behind Jimmy Kimmel, just as it was announced that his late night show will return after a short suspension.
According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the group signed an open letter on Monday 22 September, warning of a “Dark Moment for Freedom of expression” after ABC’s decision to draw Jimmy Kimmel Live! From the sky.
“We people should never accept government threats for our freedom of expression,” the letter begins. “Leaders’ efforts to print artists, journalists and companies with retribution for their speech strike in the heart of what it means to live in a free country.”
The letter named Kimmel’s removal ‘a dark moment for freedom of expression’, and added: ‘In an attempt to silence her critics, our government has resorted to threatening the livelihood of journalists, talk show -guests, artists, creatives and entertainers. This runs against the values on which our nation is built. “
Signatories also include Selena Gomez, Pedro Pascal, Meryl Streep, Robert de Niro and Mark Ruffalo.
The Late-Night program, organized by Kimmel since 2003, was drawn only a few hours before the broadcast of 17 September after his comments about Charlie Kirk’s fatal shooting.
After widespread play, ABC has confirmed that the show will return.
