The Toronto Blue Jays earned a 5-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday, buoyed by a strong performance from Max Scherzer and timely hitting.
Scherzer (1-0) pitched six solid innings, allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out four.
Toronto’s bullpen, featuring Mason Fluharty, Braydon Fisher and Jeff Hoffman, followed with three scoreless innings to end the game.
The Blue Jays took control in the fifth inning. Jesus Sanchez drove in a run with an RBI single before Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added another run with a basesloaded walk.
Toronto extended its lead in the seventh inning, with RBI singles from Kazuma Okamoto and Nathan Lukes.
Ernie Clement later added an insurance run with a double.
Colorado’s only run came in the sixth inning, when Hunter Goodman hit a solo home run. Starter Ryan Feltner struck out four in three innings before leaving the game after being hit by a comebacker.
Reliever Juan Mejia (0-1) gave up the decisive runs in the fifth, while Zach Agnos gave up more runs later in the game.
The win improves Toronto’s season record to 4-1 as the team continues its strong start.
