Afrika Bambaataa, founder of Zulu Nation and known for mixing electronic sounds in the hip-hop genre, has died at the age of 67.
According to a report from TMZ, the DJ, whose reputation was tarnished following allegations of sexual abuse, died of complications from cancer.
Africa’s bandmate and friend, Mick Benzo, confirmed the news on social media and wrote a poignant note.
“Two days ago I spoke to Afrika Bambaataa and found him in good spirits,” Mick said. “Today, however, I received calls about his death. Concerned, I contacted him but received no response. My concerns grew and I was heartbroken to hear it was true: he had fallen asleep peacefully and did not wake up. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Afrika Bambaataa, a pioneering architect and global ambassador of hip-hop culture.”
The rapper was considered one of the pioneers of hip-hop culture and introduced the electro-funk sound to hip-hop. Some of his famous songs include ‘Looking for the Perfect Beat’, ‘Renegades of Funk’ and ‘Unity’, as well as his groundbreaking sound ‘Planet Rock’.
In 2016, Africa faced multiple allegations of sexual assault and trafficking of young men in the Bronx.
However, Africa denied the claims at the time, saying they are “baseless and a cowardly attempt to tarnish my reputation and legacy in hip-hop at this time.”
