Riz Ahmed has reflected on his childhood as an “outsider” as he took on the title role Hamlet.

In a new conversation with PEOPLE MagazineRiz recently shared the challenges he faced in this industry during his early years, which helped him relate more to his character.

Admitting that he felt like an “outsider” during his younger years, he said: “I had a very inspiring English teacher who gave it to me.”

“And actually I have found a character, the core of this piece, who feels as much of an outsider as he did then.

“And I think a lot of us are feeling like such outsiders now, right? I think the central question of the play is, ‘Have I gone crazy or has the world gone crazy?’ And I think we feel that way too.”

Meanwhile, the actor, who won the 2022 Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short Film for The Long Goodbye, made a rare revelation about his work.

He revealed that he hasn’t seen the gong in a year and told the outlet that he handed it over to his mother.

“I immediately went to hand it to my mother,” he began.

She gets the first shot at all that stuff. I actually haven’t seen it in a while, so I hope she knows where it is because I don’t.”
