Urban Meyer opens up on Kyle Whittingham joining Michigan Wolverines

Urban Meyer has revealed that he initially advised Kyle Whittingham to opt out of Michigan Wolverines football before later supporting the move.

During THE SCRIPT podcast, Meyer said Whittingham reached out to him after receiving interest from Michigan.

“I got a call from the Wolverines. And I was like, ‘Wow! Wait a minute. And my first reaction was, ‘Don’t go there, buddy,'” Meyer recalled Whittingham telling him.

Meyer, who coached the rival Ohio State Buckeyes football team from 2012 to 2018, going 7-0 against Michigan, said his feelings were shaped by one of the fiercest rivalries in college football.

Despite this, Meyer later changed his position after speaking further with Whittingham.

“After we talked for about twenty minutes, my comment was, ‘That’s a perfect fit, I understand.’ Of all the people in the United States of America they should call, it’s you,” Meyer said.

Meyer also criticized the recent controversies surrounding Michigan, including NCAA investigations and the Connor Stalion sign-stealing scandal.

“Because of what’s happened over the last four or five years, I’ve lost a little bit of respect. The crap that happened up there, I don’t mean that with the Wolverine team or program,” Meyer said.
