Lupita Nyong’o chooses not to defend herself after coming under public scrutiny for her starring role in Christopher Nolan’s The Odysseyincluding harsh comments from Elon Musk.
After announcing that the actress will play Helen of Troy in the upcoming action film, Lupita faced criticism for her role as “the most beautiful woman.”
The Black Panther actress hit back at critics, saying, “You can’t radiate beauty,” in a recent conversation with Elle.
She went on to say, “I want to know who a character is. What goes beyond beauty? What goes beyond looks? That’s the fun of creating such a well-known text that has been studied and interpreted and derived from.”
“Research can be endless. The beauty of working with a writer like Chris is that it’s on the page,” she added of the director. “The research starts with the pages you get. That’s what I based it on.”
Furthermore, Lupita noted that Homer’s epic “is a mythological story.”
“I fully support Chris’ intent and the version of this story he’s telling,” Lupita added, noting that the “cast is representative of the world.”
She concluded, “I don’t spend my time coming up with a defense. The criticism will exist whether I deal with it or not.”
