Scarlett Johansson, Cate Blanchett and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are among 700 artists, writers and makers calling on tech companies to train their AI systems to do their creative work, without paying them in return or asking their permission to use it.
Their anti-AI campaign states that “stealing our work is not innovation. It is not progress. It is theft – plain and simple.”
In the wake of some lawmakers considering regulations on AI training data, the group’s statement highlights the dangers AI poses to the industry.
“They also want to protect America’s creative industries as a whole, which includes film, television, music, publishing and digital media, which supports millions of jobs, fuels economic growth and projects cultural power worldwide.”
In addition to criticism, the statement also offers a solution: make deals or partnerships with the technology companies.
“There is a better way,” the message reads, adding that licensing deals are a possible way forward. “It is possible to have it all. We can have advanced, rapidly evolving AI and ensure that creators’ rights are respected.”
Meanwhile, Johansson, who is part of the anti-AI campaign, has once again underlined the dangers of AI. A few years ago, a deepfake video went viral, prompting her to release a strong statement condemning the video.
