Halle Berry recently admitted that winning an Oscar didn’t change the trajectory of her Hollywood career.
The 59-year-old American actress, who started her career as a model, won an Oscar in the Best Actress category for her portrayal of Leticia Musgrove in the 2001 romantic thriller film. Monster ball.
In an interview with The cut prior to her crime thriller film Crime 101Berry reminisced about her Oscar win, saying that it “didn’t necessarily change the course of my career. After I won that, I thought a script truck was going to show up at my front door.”
“Even though I was extremely proud of it, the next morning I was still black. Directors were still saying, ‘If we put a black woman in this role, what does it mean for the whole story? Should I cast a black man? Then it’s a black movie. Black movies don’t sell abroad,'” she noted.
The Cat lady star, who appeared opposite Billy Bob Thornton in Lee Daniels’ Monster’s Ball, revealed that she once gave advice to three-time Academy Award nominee Cynthia Erivo: “You fucking deserve it, but I don’t know if it’s going to change your life. It can’t be the validation for what you do, right?”
