Katie Thurston shares an update on her health one year after her stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis.
The Bachelor party alum shared a positive update on her health, as she has received “stable” MRI and PET scan results and her “tumor has shrunk by 50 percent.”
The TV personality said in a video on her Instagram: “While that’s a good thing, it’s the first time in a year that my tumor hasn’t shrunk, it’s just stagnated, which has sent me into a bit of a spiral.”
Katie worried that her medications might not work, but her oncologist assured her that her tumor is stable and she does not need any other treatment.
She explained, “When you first start treatment, your body is in shock. Suddenly I’m in menopause, suddenly I’m on very strong medications. So it’s common for the tumor to shrink significantly beforehand and then that momentum slows somewhat as the treatment continues.”
“So overall my tumor has shrunk by 50 percent in the last year,” she added. “That’s great news. The PET scan showed no new spread.”
And with the progress in her health, she is also undergoing a double mastectomy.
Katie commented: ‘My latest update is actually that I am meeting with my surgeon this Friday to have a double mastectomy.
“My surgeon had approved it for my situation and so I’m going to visit her in person on Friday and discuss things in detail to find out what that looks like.”
She added: “Because that’s a really big next step in my cancer treatment journey.”
