Peter Dinklage is best known for his role as Tyrion Lannister on the series Game of Thrones.
However, the popular actor has achondroplasia, a rare genetic form of dwarfism, which he is speaking out about, explaining how he overcame challenges in the entertainment industry by breaking stereotypes.
“Because I’m my size, I get looked at quite a lot,” he said. “I’ve had stares all my life.”
As time went on and Dinklage not only appeared on screen but won awards for it, he explained how the perspective has now shifted.
“Now there is ownership when someone looks at me or approaches me. It comes from something positive,” he said. ‘It’s not just my size. It’s the work I’ve done that’s given them a second look.”
He continued, “The idea of a protagonist is now changing.”
“Whether it’s racist or whatever. It’s about time. We’re stuck with this leading man stereotype and it’s healthy to open that up. Love lives are not the domain of beautiful people – everyone has a love life,” Dinklage further explained.
Achondroplasia is a rare genetic disorder and the most common form of dwarfism, which affects bone growth.
It is caused by a mutation in your genes, which disrupts the normal development of cartilage, leading to shorter limbs and characteristic facial features.
Symptoms for achondroplasia include short stature, short arms and legs, a larger head, and limited elbow mobility. Intelligence and life expectancy are usually normal.
Even if it is no cure for achondroplasia, but treatment focuses on managing complications. Growth therapies, surgery and supportive care can improve mobility, health and overall quality of life.
