Jennifer Lawrence has looked back on her first years in Hollywood with a healthy dose of self-awareness.

In a resurfaced interview with The New Yorker from October 2025, the Hunger Games star, 35, admitted she struggles to revisit her old press appearances from the height of her fame.

“Oh no,” Lawrence said when told the reporter had rewatched her early interviews.

“So hyper. So embarrassing.”

Although she became known for being unfiltered, quirky and self-deprecating, the Oscar winner explained that her behavior was not just for laughs, but also as a shield.

“It is, or was, my real personality, but it was also a defense mechanism,” she claimed, “to just say, ‘That’s not who I am! I shit my pants every day!’”

Lawrence also reflected on the whirlwind of fame in her 20s, recalling how overwhelming that period of her life became.

“I was young, I lived alone, I was chased,” she said.

“I saw the change in public opinion coming. I worked too much and was angry about my relationship with the press.”

In retrospect, she admits that she understands the fatigue that surrounded her public persona at the time.

“I look at those interviews and that person is annoying,” she said. “I understand why it would be annoying to see that person everywhere. Ariana Grande’s impression of me on SNL was perfect.”

“I felt…I didn’t feel, I was rejected, I think, not because of my films, not because of my politics, but because of me, because of my personality,” she concluded.
