In a recent interview with Radio timesthe Disconnection director and former comedian said humor faces new obstacles in today’s political and cultural environment.
“We live in a world where taking risks with comedy is more challenging,” Stiller said.
“You see that front and center in our country. But I think it is important that comedians continue to do what they do, speak truth to power and be free to say what they want. That is the most important thing.”
His comments come as the entertainment industry continues to debate the limits of free speech in comedy.
The topic gained new attention after ABC temporarily withdrew Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air on September 17, following host Jimmy Kimmel’s comments about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The show returned to its regular schedule on September 22.
Stiller also pointed to social media as another major challenge for modern comedy, expressing concern that the fast-paced nature of platforms like TikTok and Instagram has made it harder for audiences to stay engaged.
“You have things that go to a large audience very quickly,” he said. “I think we’ve shortened our attention span a little bit. I feel fortunate to have grown up in the analog world.”

The actor, known for iconic hits such as Meet the parents, Zoolander, Dodgeball: a true underdog story, AnchormanAnd Tropical thunderhas built a career on sharp humor and bold creative choices.
Now he’s urging today’s comedians to keep doing the same – even when the world makes it harder to get a laugh.
