Bong Joon Ho, the legendary South Korean director, has opened up about his acquisition of Warner Bros. by Netflix.
The director, who chaired the jury at this year’s Marrakech Film Festival, was asked at the event for his opinion on the Netflix-Warner Bros deal.
Someone from the audience asked: “What do you think about this takeover, and what do you think about films being shown on TV, even on big TVs, and in cinemas with an audience? How do you see the future of cinema?”
Bong, known for directing films like the Oscar-winning Parasite and Snowpiercer, jokingly replied, “Honestly, I don’t know what’s going on out there in LA. I’m just a South Korean guy who stays at home.” However, he noted that he really enjoyed watching two films a day “in the big theater, on the big screen” for ten days at the Marrakech Film Festival.
It adds: “Streaming is also a good way to watch and enjoy movies.”
“But I don’t think the cinematic experience will go away so easily,” said Bong Joon Ho.
This comes after Netflix announced on Friday its plan to buy Warner Bros and HBO Max in an $82.7 billion deal. Many critics are calling the deal the ‘death of cinema’.
