Brendan Fraser recites his 2023 Oscar The whale hasn’t helped much with his self-doubt.
Fraser, 56, made the admission in a recent interview with the Associated pressand says that even at this stage of his career, trust remains a struggle.
His latest film, Rental family, cast him as an American actor doing odd jobs in Tokyo, a role he said served as a reality check. “Don’t get too comfortable. It could happen to me.”
“I have trouble with self-confidence,” he admitted. “I always feel like I’m not good enough. No critic or snappy internet comment can bite me more than I can in my personal thoughts.”
Fraser reflected on his attempt to overcome that mentality, recalling the advice he once received Saturday evening live producer Lorne Michaels during one of his hosting stints.
“He told me, ‘You know, it’s all about trust.’ I don’t know if that turned me on or not.”
He added: “Forget everything you know and just own it. Can you do that, that’s the question – the eternal question.”
Fraser said the post-Oscars period had him searching for a project that felt right, which unexpectedly led him Rental Familydirected by Hikari.
“It was a moment of, ‘I think things will be a little different in the future,’” he said.
Taking a job that required him to immerse himself in Japanese culture also provided a necessary reset. “I just wanted to remove myself from whatever this place is,” he explained.
Fraser will next play Dwight D. Eisenhower in the war drama Busy and is ready to return to The mummy franchise.
