Adjoa Andoh has opened up about why Lady Danbury’s desire to explore life outside London is long overdue Bridgerton season 4.

In a new conversation with PEOPLE Magazinethe 63-year-old reflected on Agatha’s growing urge to look beyond the world she spent decades building, and the deeper questions about identity that resurface in her character.

“We meet a woman who we know is very established in this world, but like Charlotte, she comes from other worlds,” Andoh said, referencing Agatha’s backstory revealed in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

“Even though Danbury came [to London] at four, who was I before I was four? What does it look like where I came? [from]? I mean, what does she remember about that place?’

“I think we come to moments in our lives… where suddenly you want to think a little bit and think about things that maybe you haven’t had time to think about — about who you are in the world,” she continued.

Andoh described London as “Danbury’s world,” adding, “I don’t think she wants to throw this world away, but she needs to soothe her heart by scratching the itch.”

With Queen Charlotte refusing Agatha’s wish, she also reflected on the tension between the old friends.

The “juicy conflict,” as Andoh called it, was “interesting and exciting to play” with Golda Rosheuvel.

“I think a lot of us have long friendships, and those friendships are tested… what are the compromises you have to make to maintain them?” she concluded.
