Colin Farrell is set to return as John Sugar in Apple TV’s second season Sugar.
In the show, Farrell plays private investigator John Sugar who investigates the disappearance of Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel’s granddaughter, Olivia. Spoiler alert! The first season featured the twist that Sugar is an alien.
During Apple TV’s first press day at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, the actor spoke about what Season 2 of the show will entail after the big reveal.
He said, “Sugar gets involved in violence. That’s one of the things he questions about himself more than anything. The questions are quite heavy this season, but he always believes in the basic decency of humanity. I don’t know if I share that belief all the time. I touch on it sometimes, but to play a character that even when he’s shaky in that belief, that belief is always there, even when he questions his own goodness, his belief in the potential decency of humanity is always there.” And that’s a nice, kind character, without, I hope, being vanilla and high-fiving everyone he knows. He knows life is hard, but he believes in human decency, and that’s okay.”
He explained that the drama element is strong in the show and can stand on its own without the alien aspect of it.
“It was more to protect ourselves and also to test ourselves within the realm of the show’s human drama by believing that the show should be able to stand on its own without any other worldly aspects to it,” the spokesperson said. Banshees of Inisherin actor noted.
“Sugar is really just a device. He’s a being from a faraway land who comes to experience what it is to be a human. Through it we discover what it is to be a human, all the anger, all the rage, all the things we see that don’t work and that are horrific. But Sugar, for my money – and this is one of the things I like most about the show – he always leans towards optimism and towards the beauty he sees in human beings,” the Penguin star explained.
Sugar Season 2 starring Colin Farrell will be released on Apple TV on June 19.
