Courtney Love recalls how ‘comparison’ left Marianne Faithfull ‘broken’

Courtney Love just revealed that she and Marianne Faithfull didn’t like being compared.

The musicians were each known for their romantic involvements with famous frontmen, Courtney for her marriage to late Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain, and Marianne for her relationship with The Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger.

But the 61-year-old spoke up The times this week that both she and Marianne, who died in January last year aged 78, hated being held up against each other for comparison.

“In terms of her influence, we really hated being compared to each other,” the Hole frontwoman said ahead of the documentary-biopic’s release Broken Englishabout Marianne’s life.

“Marianne was an intellectual and I wasn’t. She read Dante’s Inferno and I like a cheap thrill and a Beatles hook. But I remember her saying, ‘They wanted to destroy me!’ I know from experience, she’s not wrong,” Courtney added.

When The Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards’ home was raided during a drug bust in 1967, police found Marianne dressed in nothing but a fur rug.

Courtney explained that she believed one thing she had in common with Marianne was a search for “dignity.”

“It’s dignity. And a refusal to be defined by a short-term relationship with ‘The Great Man,'” she said.

“She told me I was ‘the girl in the carpet’ and had really messed with her and that shouldn’t have been the case,” Courtney Love concluded.
