David Spade reflected on the incident that changed his relationship with Eddie Murphy forever.
During the final episode of his Fly on the wall podcast, the 62-year-old comedian recalled his infamous Saturday evening live sketch in which he made fun of Eddie Murphy’s film career.
“I really love Eddie Murphy,” David said on his podcast. “We had some bumps in the road in the beginning. It was weird going from being a super fan to him hating me overnight and trying to win him back for the past 25 years.”
The Adults The star went on to say that he did “Weekend Update on SNL” and was “new to the show, making fun of all the celebrities.”
“I was making fun of him and it didn’t go well. He called me and we worked it out,” David continued. ‘Actually, he figured it out. I didn’t really fight back because I felt a little guilty about it, and he was kind of into it.”
“I just didn’t like that because he was a hero,” added the Tommy Boy actor.
The joke in question was made on the December 9, 1995 episode of the late-night show.
“Look, kids, it’s a shooting star, make a wish,” David said at the time, making fun of Eddie’s career.
