Demi Lovato shares the real reason behind making her rehabilitation journey public

Demi Lovato recently explained her decision to make her rehabilitation journey public.

The Heart attack singer shared the real reason behind making her time in rehab public during an appearance on the latest episode of Las Culturistas on Oct. 22.

“I had to make a decision when I went into treatment for the first time,” the 33-year-old said.

Demi continued, “I had a very public outburst when I was 18 that I talk about in some of my documentaries, but God, there are so many of them.”

Interestingly enough, the Let it go crooner pointed out that her manager at the time asked her if she wanted to make her rehab problem public or just “sweep it under the rug.”

“But I was like, ‘I didn’t have a role model speaking out about eating disorders when I was 13 and I need to be that role model for someone else,’” Demi said.

The American singer believed that it was the ‘responsibility’ she wanted to take on because she never had anyone to look up to when she was growing up.

The Camp Rock However, the star went on to say that there were a few actresses who raised their voices on similar issues, but there were none that she could relate to at the age of 13.

“Especially at a time when beauty standards were very dangerous. And so I wanted to be that for other people,” she continued.

That’s why Demi added, “I’ve been open about all my problems because at that moment when I made that decision, it set the tone for the rest of my life: You know, I want to help people.”

“And the best way I know is to share my personal experiences with them,” she concluded.
