Ethan Hawke has released a candid and emotional reflection on his daughter Maya Hawke.
As fans will know, the actor shares Maya and son Levon with Uma Thurman, his former wife.
Resurfaced during a Actors at Actors Interview with the Everyone but you December 2025 hitmaker Sydney Sweeney, the 55-year-old star admitted parts of Maya’s childhood were difficult.
“There were many things in her childhood that were very, very difficult and complicated, and things that I regret for her,” he said during the discussion organized by Variety And CNN.
Hawke also reflected on recognizing his daughter’s creative instincts from a very young age, while acknowledging the emotional weight she carried throughout her childhood.
According to the actor, when Maya was just four years old, he could already see signs of the artist she would become.
He also said that activities such as watercolor painting, dancing and singing became an outlet for her expression, even as teachers questioned whether she was truly happy.
Hawke recalled that Maya once gave a striking response to that concern: “Do you really think that’s the question?”
Nevertheless, Maya built a successful career in Hollywood and became one of the standout stars of her generation. She later gained worldwide fame for her role as Robin Buckley in the hit Netflix series Stranger thingswhich recently concluded its fifth and final season.
