The death of 72-year-old Nottingham Forest legend John Robertson circulated among the football community and left a sad impression on Christmas Eve.
The club announced on December 25, 2025: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Nottingham Forest legend and dear friend, John Robertson.”
Robertson signed for Forest at the age of 15 and soon made his debut at 17 – a key player who won the First Division title in 1978 before going on to successive European Cup victories.
He also won 28 caps for Scotland during his five-year international career, including his selection for the 1978 and 1982 World Cups.
He won the European Cup twice in Forest, provided the assist in the 1979 final and then scored the winner in the 1980 final, reports Sky News.
After two years at Derby, Robertson returned to the City Ground in 1985, making twelve appearances in his final season before being released.
After retiring, John later moved into coaching as an assistant to former Forest teammate Martin O’Neill at Celtic and Aston Villa.
Robertson’s family released a statement: “It is with immense pain and sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
“Although our hearts break, we will always be grateful for the years we shared with him and the wonderful memories we made. We will miss him every day and love him always.”
John passed away peacefully on Christmas morning, with family by his side, after a long illness.
He is survived by his daughter and two sons and grandchildren.
