Hilary Duff reveals the inspiration behind writing ‘Mature’ with Matthew Koma

Hilary Duff marked her return to music with the song: Adultbut it was not originally rooted in a positive experience.

The 38-year-old singer and actress revealed it was inspired by a “short” but difficult experience in her life with an ex-partner.

The Lizzy McGuire star noted that it was “a very, very long time ago”, but “It’s not entirely autobiographical. I took a few artistic liberties to make the song work structurally, but the essence is the essence”, in a new interview with Fashion.

Duff continued, “I looked back on this relationship and thought about whether this man had a habit of dating younger women or if I was ‘special.’ The whole experience was super therapeutic to write about, but being so vulnerable through your music can be very scary.”

The Metamorphosis hitmaker co-wrote the song with her husband, Matthew Koma, and songwriter Madison Love, and she recalled, “Some of it was an idea that Matt came up with, and some of it came from thinking about that idea of not recognizing younger versions of yourself when you’re now deep into your 30s.”

The record represents a full-circle moment for Duff, as it speaks volumes about ultimately making peace with your choices.
