James Cameron made it clear that Arnold Schwarzenegger will not appear in the upcoming film Terminator term.
The 71-year-old filmmaker gave the shocking update during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“I can safely say that it won’t be,” James admitted. “It’s time for a new generation of characters.”
“I insisted that Arnold should be involved in Terminator: Dark Fate, and it was a great ending to playing the T-800,” continued the Avatar: Fire and Ashes director.
James added: “There needs to be a broader interpretation of Terminator and the idea of a time war and super intelligence. I want to do new things that people don’t imagine.”
For those unfamiliar, Arnold has appeared in every movie Terminator film to date, except for the 2009 one Terminator rescue.
The 78-year-old actor said this earlier this year Rescue was his least favorite movie because he wasn’t in it.
“How do you make a Terminator movie without me being in the Terminator movie? It doesn’t make any sense,” he told Andy Cohen. Watch what’s happening live.
Meanwhile, James is super excited to start the seventh Terminator film.
“When the dust on Avatar clears in a few months, I’ll really look into it,” he said. “There are a lot of narrative problems to solve. The biggest one is: How do I stay informed enough about what’s really happening to make it science fiction?”
