James Cameron is a mainstay of the Avatar franchise, and as the film series grows, he says he won’t let another director take it over.
“Absolutely not!” he says The City with Matthew Belloni podcast. “There I have choices. There are levels that I delve into. I could produce it.”
He continues, “I don’t think there will ever be a version where there’s another Avatar movie that I haven’t painstakingly produced. But in terms of taking over my life, that’s a threshold issue for me.”
Avatarmeanwhile, requires significant capital to earn; in this light, James shares that he is open to leaving the franchise if Disney decides to end it, as the film series does not generate enough revenue to justify new installments.
“It’s one metric f*** ton of money, which means we have to make two metric f*** tons of money to make a profit,” he adds.
“I have no doubt that this movie will make money. The question is, will it make enough money to do it again?”
The Academy-winning director also notes, “People tend to dismiss sequels unless it’s the third Lord of the Rings movie and you want to see what happens to everyone, which I think is the culmination of a storyline, but that may not be how audiences see it.”
To make matters worse, James says streaming and COVID mean a large portion of people can no longer watch movies in theaters.
Avatar: Fire and Ashes will hit theaters on December 19.
