Jay-Z has dropped his thoughts on the most explosive war in rap history between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, and it’s not what fans would expect.
In a long interview with GQ magazinehe blames social media for crossing a line involving family.
“People like Kendrick hate Drake no matter what he does. It’s like an attack on his character. I don’t know if I like that,” he says.
Pointing to social media, Jay-Z added, “I don’t know if it helps our growth where the fallout ends up, especially on social media. It goes too far. It brings people’s children into it. I don’t like that.”
The Grammy winner compares old raps to newer ones, which he says have become toxic as fans on social media rigidly take sides and declare a war.
“I sound like the old man wagging his finger, but I think we can achieve the same thing, as far as sparring with music, by working more together rather than taking the whole thing apart. I used to be able to handle it because there was no social media.”
Social media seeped in so deeply that Jay-Z admits he wonders if it’s worth it now.
“You had the struggle and it was fun and then you moved on. At this point I don’t know if it can bear this with the technology we have. It’s like trying to cut people’s lives short. I don’t know if it’s worth it at this point.”
Drake and Lamar’s rap war is entrenched in pop culture and becoming a lightning rod for their respective fan bases.
