Kate Hudson reflected on how she learned to deal with the excitement and kept her expectations low during awards season.
The How to lose a man in 10 days star credited Kurt Russell with teaching her to keep her feet on the ground before heading to the 2001 Academy Awards after being nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Almost famous.
During her appearance on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Showshe revealed that her mother Goldie Hawn’s longtime partner Russell encouraged her to focus on the experience rather than the outcome.
“I was so young and it was such a whirlwind,” she said, before sharing that Russell is “the great barometer of the company, my life.”
“My father, who raised me, kept saying, ‘Don’t listen to everyone. You never know. You never know what’s going to happen. Sometimes you might win and you might not, and sometimes you don’t think you’re going to win and you might win,'” she added.
And even as many people told her she would win, the Hollywood star said she attended the ceremony with no expectations and lost the trophy to Pollock’s Marcia Gay Harden.
“You can’t have the expectation,” she said. “It was a good first lesson.”
She said she will attend the Oscars this year with the same attitude she was nominated for Song sung blue.
Hudson further revealed what she will say in her speech in case she wins. “I’m not a fan of the rehearsed speech,” she said.
“I like it when it comes from the heart, spontaneous and authentic or nervous and real. I have so many things to say about my family that I’m nervous to even prepare any of it.
“I think it should just come out the way it should come out.”
