Rian Johnson worked as a director with many actors in his film Knives out franchise. But one star he has yet to work with is the most Academy-nominated actress, Meryl Streep.
“There are so many actors I haven’t worked with,” he says IndieWire. “That’s one of the real benefits of making these films: you get to meet new actors and big casts.”
“If you’re reading this, Meryl Streep, I feel like you could very well be in a murder mystery,” says the filmmaker, adding that it is his desire to work with her.
Meanwhile, in a separate interview, Rian and Daniel Craig, who plays Benoit Blanc in the franchise, were asked if Knives from 4 is a possibility.
“I don’t really see it as a trilogy,” says the director GoldDerbywho leads James Bond star to add: “I guess there are three.”
He continues: “I don’t think I see it as a trilogy either. Maybe that’s up to you. But the civil answer is that if we can excite each other enough, we’ll make another one.”
Moreover, they also shed light on their relationship as a director-actor duo since the franchise began in 2019.
“It’s become more of a partnership. On the first film, we met the cold and jumped in. [Collaborating] has been one of the great joys of it,” says Rian, adding: “The thing is, we didn’t make the first film thinking we’d make two more! We’ve both been in the tooth long enough to realize that’s not the way it works.
“It was a great surprise for everyone involved how the audience reacted to the first one, which presented itself as: ‘Now you have to make another one. That’s a higher class problem, but it’s still a problem,” Daniel notes.
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is playing in theaters.
