Laura Dern doesn’t adhere to ageism on social media and in Hollywood.
Laura sat down The independent to promote her new film Is this thing on? The actress reflected on the rise of cosmetic procedures to stop signs of aging and people’s general reaction to anyone showing such signs.
“Lately, I’ve never seen so much shame around aging and women as public figures, and it’s just so tragic,” she noted.
Laura gave the example of her good friend Sheryl Crow, whom she recently met and marveled at.
“She’s tougher than ever. She sounds better. She’s hotter than ever! And yet, [we’re still hearing] this old story about hiding or fixing all the things that show our wisdom,” she noted.
Laura’s co-star Andra Day, who joined her in the interview, agreed, adding, “I’m abolishing the social rules of what you’re supposed to do at this age. I’m not going to do any of the cringe that people or society – even subconsciously – demand of me. I’m going to break the rules, basically.”
She further noted that thanks to social media and newer cosmetic procedures, people are being more ruthless about signs of aging.
“But it’s so much worse now than it was before my mother’s generation,” she sighed. ‘I remember as a child hearing her friends talk about the pressure at 70 to get a facelift if you wanted to keep working.
The Lonely planet star added, “But now I hear my 21-year-old daughter’s friends saying, ‘You should get Botox now so you never get wrinkles again.'”
“Preventive Botox!” Dag noted.
“It’s tragic!” stated the Big little lies star.
The Academy Award winner also argued that preventive Botox is just a ploy to get girls to buy more.
Laura said: “So the idea that we’re making progress in empowerment is bats***. And these are societal norms that are mostly born out of people’s fears and insecurities. And it’s all consumerism, right?… They say there’s going to be a whole generation of girls buying our products if we say it’s ‘preventive’. But we’re supposed to be the ones who don’t believe in it, right?”
She concluded, “So I look forward to seeing us all grow together into comfort in our own skin.”
Is this thing on?directed by Bradley Cooper and starring Will Arnet opposite Laura Dern, is now in theaters.
