Lucy Liu opened up about a terrifying chapter from her past.
Speaking to People Magazine, the actress revealed that she once underwent surgery after being wrongly diagnosed with cancer.
In the 1990s she discovered a lump in her breast and sought medical advice. The doctor at the time diagnosed him with cancer and, relying on the diagnoses, Liu proceeded with surgery to remove the lump.
“I didn’t really think about it much. But it was scary, because there was less information available at that time, because we didn’t have the internet,” Liu said of her cancer diagnoses.
Now, decades later, the Devil Wears Prada 2 actress reflected on her journey and said, “I think that was the beginning of understanding how to stand up for myself.”
“Even though my friend said he should get a second opinion, I actually thought, ‘What’s the point? The doctor knows what they’re talking about,” Lucy Liu recalls.
Additionally, the actress emphasized the importance of early diagnoses through cancer screening, saying, “It’s not about the solution, it’s about really understanding what screening is, and about information and advocacy. That’s very important.”
“And even though there is so much available to us technologically, many people don’t do it because they don’t want to know if something is wrong or because they are too busy. … [But] No matter how busy you are, it is a life-saving thing because it is often noticed too late, and at that point you are actually scrambling to figure out what your resources are,” Liu added.
