A man has been arrested for approaching two Australian women cricketers and allegedly touching them inappropriately in Indore, Indian police said on Saturday.
The incident took place on Thursday, a day after Australia’s victory over England in the group stage of the Women’s World Cup.
The two players were walking from their hotel to a cafe when they were allegedly approached by a motorcyclist.
“The security officers of the Australian women’s cricket team have filed a complaint after two members of the team encountered inappropriate conduct,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Dandotiya told Indian news agency ANI.
“A First Information Report (FIR) was registered and the suspect was identified and arrested after an intensive strategic operation.”
He has been charged under sections 74 and 78 of the Criminal Code, which relate to assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty and stalking respectively.
“We are investigating whether there are any shortcomings in the security protocols,” Dandotiya added.
