Matthew McConaughey says he struggles to watch his own movies after they’re done.
The actor, 56, admitted as much on a recent episode of SiriusXM’s Where everyone knows your name podcast with Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson.
McConaughey explained that although he feels comfortable in the moment on set, he becomes overly critical when he looks at himself later.
“I’m fucking Brando or Olivier when I’m working,” Danson added. “When I look at it, oh dear. I get so judgmental.”
He said that it often takes him four tries to finish one of his own films and that it is not until the fourth showing that he can complete the film without dissecting every choice he made on screen.
“I’m a four-way guy,” he said. “I watch my own work. The fourth time I watch it, if I get that far, is when I can watch the whole movie.”
The Oscar winner admitted that his discomfort stems from his highly self-analysis, as he tends to judge his work harshly.
“I’m going to be judgmental, and I’m not wrong. But maybe I shouldn’t be so harsh,” he shared, adding that he prefers acting on set. “I enjoy doing it. … We’ve all done it long enough. You know when you hit it, you have to look away and say, ‘Yes,’ and they say, ‘Yes.'”
While he believes some of that criticism is justified, he acknowledged that he may have been too hard on himself. For McConaughey, the satisfaction comes from doing the work, not judging it afterwards.
He also shared that constantly re-watching his performances could make him worry too much about appearance or ego, something he actively tries to avoid. Once he and the director agree that a scene works, he’d rather move on than watch it again.
During the conversation, McConaughey reflected on how the experience has changed his approach to acting. Early in his career, he said there was often a gap between what he set out to do and what appeared on screen. Over time, that gap narrowed as his instincts sharpened.
