Matthew McCoughaney has revealed one unique characteristic of Christopher Nolan that is specific to his filmmaking.
In a new chat for VarietyMatthew McCoughaney had a candid chat about his work experience with none other than Christopher Nolan.
Reflecting on his experiences with the filmmaker while working on Interstellar, The acting sensation showed that Nolan always took the time to think about the questions McCoughaney asked.
“He had written this world and these concepts and the rules of this world. Time travel, and how it’s different in different places and different frequencies.”
Eventually he would return to him and explain the concept in a way that would make perfect sense.
“So sometimes I would go to him and ask him the rules. Sometimes he would give me an answer, and sometimes he would say, ‘I don’t know.’ Let me come back to you.” And he always came back. A week later: ‘I was thinking about the question you asked.’”
“He would explain it and it would make sense,” he recalled.
He also noted that Nolan is a practical problem solver who doesn’t complicate simple things.
“The other thing I remember is that Chris isn’t going to complicate something simple. This is a guy who had a budget to get all the toys, but the way we shot certain scenes where I’m floating through space, I’m on a gimbal that he’s holding on the other side.”
“I remember saying, ‘Why not use the big cranes?’ “Because it’s a waste of money. It’s only as good – or not as good – as this.”
“’This, what I learned making independent films, is still the best way to make this picture.’ He always kept it simple when necessary.”
