Former Pacer Mohammad Amir has clarified that he has no plans to reverse his retirement, and emphasizes that his decision to step away from Cricket will remain final.
In a candid video message, Amir said while his fans encourage him to return, Pakistan must continue to progress.
“For the past two or three days I have heard that Mohammad Amir is making a comeback and takes back his retirement. There has been no discussion about a comeback or the retirement of retirement, nor have I have such a plan. The decision I made with regard to retirement is final,” he added.
“My fans say I have to come back, but Pakistan Cricket must also move forward,” he added.
It is relevant to mention that Amir announced his retirement of International Cricket for the second time on December 14, 2024, after the ICC T20 World Cup, and stated that it was time for the next generation to take over.
This followed on his earlier decision to retire in December 2020, from which he returned at the beginning of 2024 to be available for the T20 World Cup.
The left-arm Pacer also emphasized the importance of giving opportunities to young players.
“There are young players in the team. If the young people play consistent, a strong team will be formed in two or three years. I hope the team will be well prepared for the World Cup. We have played the Asia Cup final; now I hope we play the World Cup final and also win,” he said.
Rumors recently emerged that suggested changes to the selection committee, in which former Pacer AQIB Javed was replaced as the main selector by 2017 Champions Trophy-winning captain Sarfaraz Ahmed.
The Pacer welcomed the involvement of Sarfaraz with every capacity and emphasized his support for the role of the former captain in Pakistan Cricket.
“As far as Sarfaraz Ahmed is concerned, there are reports that he is being made the most important selector. Even if he is not appointed as head selector, if he comes in as a selector, it will be a good decision. Sarfaraz Ahmed has played with the current players, which can be an advantage,” he said.
The 33-year-old praised Sarfaraz for his integrity and emphasized the importance of using experienced former cricketers in the system.
“Sarfaraz Ahmed is an honest and sincere person; Pakistan Cricket can benefit from people like him. Cricketers must also be able to manage things and have to be good players. Many cricketers came earlier, but they left the team.”
He also suggested the recording of experienced former players in advisory and coaching roles.
“Shoaib akhtar, Umar Gul and Sohail Tanvir should be used in white ball cricket because they have great expertise. Younis Khan must also be brought into the system; he is not a ‘yes-man’.”
