The backlash was due to Zoe Gutierrez being Mexican, which A’zion is not. In Holly Brickley’s novel, the character is a close friend of music critic Percy, who will be played by Cailee Spaeny.

The Marty Supreme star explained that she knew nothing of her character’s origins, saying, “Thanks guys for bringing this to my attention.”

She continued: “I’m so sorry this happened. I went for Percy but was offered Zoe instead and immediately said yes! I’m so angry everyone, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid attention to all aspects of Zoe before I accepted… and now that I know what I know? Fuck that. I’m out!”

“I would never take over a role from someone else that was meant for that. That’s what it MUST do! That’s not me. There are a lot of people who are more than capable of playing this role and I’m not one of them. I can’t wait to see who it ends up being,” concluded the Great army actress.
