Olivia Rodrigo just admitted she struggles to write songs when she’s happy.
The pop star is gearing up to release her currently untitled third album, which will follow 2021’s Pickles and its follow-up in 2023 Innards – but she admits it’s a challenge to write melancholic music when she’s in a “joyful place” in life.
She told me Fashion magazine: “It was a creative challenge to write from a joyful place. When you experience being connected to someone, or feeling really good, you don’t think about bittersweet poems in your head!”
Olivia was in a relationship with actor Louis Partridge and she got the inspiration for the album from spending time with him in his native Britain – revealing that many of the songs have ‘London vibes’.
The singer also revealed that she still has a number of songs to write before the album is finished, but she explained to the publication that the track list is largely made up of “sad love songs,” adding, “I realized that all my favorite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a hint of fear or longing in them.”
Olivia explained that one of her new songs is about “what I think being in love feels like.”
She said of the untitled song: “You get to the root of all your problems: how you feel about yourself, your insecurities, what makes you happy.”
“It feels like the rawest form of you, which is sometimes so frightening and terrifying and uncomfortable, but sometimes beautiful,” concluded Olivia Rodrigo.
