San Francisco: OpenAi has released free long-awaited chatgpt-5 and opened its most powerful AI model to millions of users around the world.

The move comes as the competition between tech giants to lead the AI race every day.

OpenAi said that Chatgpt-5 is smarter, faster and more reliable than ever and feels more like chatting with a real expert than on a machine. The update is part of the company’s urge to be at the forefront of a rapidly changing industry where every breakthrough counts.

Chatgpt-5 has now been rolled out for free for all users, where the AI tool that is currently used by nearly 700 million people every week, Openai said during a media briefing.

Co-founder and Chief Executive Sam Altman described the newest model as “clearly a model that is generally intelligent”.

However, he emphasized that more progress is needed to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI) – the type of AI that can think like a person.

“This is not a model that continuously learns from new information that it encounters during use – which has the feeling that it is part of Agi,” Altman explained.

“But the level of capacity here is a huge improvement.”

Industry experts have praised the start of a new AI era – one in which intelligent machines change the way people live and work.

“As the pace of AI preface speeds up, the development of super intelligence comes into view,” wrote Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg in a recent internal memo.

“I believe this will be the start of a new era for humanity.”

Altman said that there were still “orders of more profit” to still go to Agi.

“Of course … you have to invest in computing power with an eye-water rate to get there, but we are planning to keep doing it,” he said.

Tech giants such as Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and Elon Musk’s Xai invest billions of dollars in AI research and development since the launch of the first Chatgpt model at the end of 2022.

Earlier this year, the Chinese start-up Deepseek surprised the AI sector by releasing a powerful model that delivers high performance with more affordable chips.

‘PhD level expert’

With fierce worldwide competition in the AI room, Altman claimed that Chatgpt-5 is now leading the field in areas such as coding, writing, health care and more.

“GPT-3 felt like a conversation with a high school student a question, you might get a correct answer or something that is completely finished,” said Altman.

“GPT-4 was more like talking with a university student. GPT-5 is the first time it really feels like you’re chatting with a PhD students on every subject.”

Altman believes that “atmospheric coding”-the possibility of building software through natural conversation-will become a decisive characteristic of the Chatgpt-5 era.

The British AI expert Simon Willison, who had early access to the model, wrote in a blog post: “My judgment: it’s just good at things. It doesn’t feel like a dramatic jump forward, but it rarely rares – and often makes an impression.”

Elon Musk, however, claimed on X (formerly Twitter) that his own AI model, Grok 4 Heavy, was “smarter” than Chatgpt-5.

Fair AI?

According to the Safety Research of OpenAI Alex Beutel, Chatgpt-5 is trained to be reliable and to prevent harmful tasks from being helped.

“We have built evaluations to measure how often it can mislead and trained the model to be honest,” said Beutel.

The model is designed to produce “safe completion” – reactions that do not share sensitive or potentially dangerous information, he added.

Also this week, OpenAi launched two new AI models that are freely available for downloading and adjusting, in a movement aimed at challenging similar offers from competitors.

The release of this “Open-Weight Language Models” comes when the company is confronted with growing calls to be more transparent, in accordance with its original mission as a non-profit organization.
