Over two hours of weekly exercise boosts chances of reversing prediabetes: study

The global increase in diabetes with type 2 diabetes is a major problem for public health, which currently affects more than 6% of the adult population – a number that is expected to reach around 7% by 2030.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), type 2 diabetes can usually be prevented. Important preventive measures include a healthy weight and participating in consistent physical activity, both of which can help prevent prediabetes-dressed by high blood sugar levels and insulin resistance of the development of full diabetes.

A recent study published in cardiovascular diabetology – endocrinology reports contributes to the growing evidence that exercise plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The findings suggest that performing just over two hours of exercises a week can help individuals with prediabetes to turn the condition and prevent them from developing.

Dr. David Cutler, a doctor with board certified general practitioner in Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, Ca, who was not involved in the study, explained this today in an interview with medical news:

“The health effect of having diabetes is in -depth. There is an increased risk of almost each category of diseases: heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, vascular diseases, blindness and infection. These ailments lead to earlier death and considerably disabled quality of life prior to death for diabetics.

By going more than 150 minutes of physical activity per week, the chances of reversing prediabetes increased considerably, making individuals four times more likely to return to normal blood sugar levels.

“The study clearly strengthens which doctors have been telling patients for a long time: diet, weight control and exercise are the most important ingredients for a long and healthy life. And now you can have a concrete target to shoot, 150 minutes exercise per week,” said Cutler.

In addition to regular exercises, maintaining HBA1C levels under 6.0% was identified by researchers as a key factor in stimulating the chance of reversing prediabetes.
