Reese Witherspoon opened about one of the most difficult chapters of her life and revealed how an abuse relationship in her younger years had lasting scars about her self -confidence.
The Morning Show actress shared her story during a recent episode of The New York Times’ The Interview Podcast, which explained that although she looked strong on the outside, she struggled inside.
“I was very good at being a professional and showing up and doing the right thing, but I was not emotionally mature when I was young,” she said. “You come to relationships that don’t work for you, and sometimes you don’t even see the dynamics that happens.”
Witherspoon explained that leaving the poisonous relationship was just the beginning and the real challenge then came when she remained that she believed the negative things that her former partner had said about her.
“It took me a while to reconstruct myself,” she admitted.
“My mind was reduced because I thought all those terrible things that person said about me were where. I had to wired my brain again.”
Now 49, the star said it took years of healing to rebuild her strength and identity.
However, she also thought about the struggle to live in public interest, and called it ‘almost impossible’ to preserve privacy while raising her children.
“It took me a long time to be this woman I am now,” she said. “I have a lot of compassion for people who lead public life and retain privacy.”
The candid reflections of Reese follow earlier comments she made in 2018, when she told Oprah Winfrey that standing up for herself after abuse her “on a cellular level” changed and enabled her to completely embrace her ambition.
