Rian Johnson only declares that he will make ‘Knives Out’ films

The Knives out franchise, helmed by Rian Johnson, will get a third film, and only he, the filmmaker, confirms he will direct it if the murder mystery series expands in the future.

“I don’t see it as IP,” he says Variety. “Every Knives Out movie is something I want to make. If that’s not the case anymore, we won’t make another one.”

His comments echoed his previous comments about his desire to direct more whodunit films.

“Creatively, I feel energized after making this one. Daniel and I are already starting to formulate… what could be next if we make another one? I don’t know why I would stop if we could keep making them,” he shared.

Meanwhile, Daniel Craig, who stars as Benoit Blanc, is the main protagonist of the franchise. In the latest interview he reflects on his relationship with Rian as a director-acting duo in the franchise, which started in 2019.

“The thing is, we didn’t make the first movie thinking we’d make two more! We’re both in the tooth long enough to realize that’s not the way it works,” he tells Gold Derby.

“For everyone involved, it was a great surprise how the audience reacted to the first one, and it presents itself as: Now you have to make another one. That’s a high-quality problem, but it’s still a problem.”

Rian further adds, “It’s become more of a partnership. On the first film, we met the cold and jumped in. [Collaborating] has been one of its true joys.
