Robyn has praised Billie Eilish as a “great example” of a young artist who doesn’t use her body to sell music.
The 46-year-old singer admitted that it was difficult dealing with record executives when she was younger.
She remembered “how grown men talked about photos and images, about styling, about sexuality,” but was impressed by the way Billie handled her fame.
Robin said The Guardian newspaper: “Thankfully I never had any experiences that could be labeled as abuse. But there was an environment and a culture that was abhorrent, and the language around my body, or how grown men talked about photos and images, about styling, about sexuality…”
“It was extremely brutal and intimidating, and my way of dealing with it was to just put on armor. I didn’t want to show my body, I didn’t even want to experiment, which I think is sad,” To live hitmaker reflected.
“They were talking about wanting me to show my ‘youthfulness,’ which meant more skin,” the artist said, then revealed how it actually made her feel.
“But in those meetings, they didn’t even find it embarrassing. There was no one on the other side who would defend my position, so my strategy was to keep them at a distance,” she said.
Robyn then went on to praise the Ocean eyes singer Billie, for confronting societal norms and expectations by creating her own signature style.
“Of course I look at it as, ‘Oh, that was great that I had the strength to do that.’ And Billie Eilish is a great example of how it is still possible and necessary to stop that if you are a young artist, if you want to keep your integrity,” praised the Swedish DJ.
“But it’s sad because at 16 you do have a sexuality. As a young woman you have a playful, sensual side that can still be interesting and beautiful, but it wasn’t possible for me to explore that at all,” Robyn reflected on how the expectations of the industry affected her.
