Shaggy star reacts to Netflix’s upcoming ‘Scooby-Doo’ show

Matthew Lillard about new Netflix series ‘Scooby-Do’: ‘I’m really happy’

A live-action origin series about Scooby Doo is in the making. Matthew Lillard, who played Shaggy in the two Mystery Inc. films, has given his thoughts on the upcoming show.

In an interview with Entertainment weeklysays the actor: “My overall thought is that I’m very happy for them. I think the show should come back.”

He continues, “We haven’t done an animated series in years, which I think is terrible. I think it’s a great way for kids to understand storytelling.”

Lillard also points to the bond fans shared with the franchise, saying, “It’s a lot of kids’ first exposure to ghost stories, right?

“It’s about friendship and sticking together as a gang and working together to solve mysteries — and that it’s usually a dangerous white man behind a mask. These are the things kids need to learn.”

As a purist, he wants to avoid reinventing the story too much about Netflix’s live-action series, because it would betray what the franchise stands for.

“I think it’s good to have it back. My hope is that they stick to what’s tried and true and do their best with it. But the reality is, I’m kind of a purist when it comes to that franchise. The core of it is really about friendship. It’s really beautiful, and I hope they keep that.”

In the meantime, the Scooby Doo The series will begin filming in April 2026.
