‘Stranger Things’ brings famed director out of retirement

Frank Darabont, best known for his direction The Shawshank redemption, the green mile, And The walking deadamong others has been retired for a while after a call from the makers of Stranger things.

As a fan of the show, he remembers how he got into the series. “My wife and I were fans of the show from the beginning. We had watched all four seasons three, four, maybe even five times.”

He tells Variety“It was so good. One day my agent called me out of the blue and said, ‘The agent in the office next to me represents the Duffer brothers, and he just wanted me to tell you that they are big fans of yours.’

“I said, ‘That’s fantastic. That’s very flattering. I’m a big fan of theirs.” So I thought, “Well, next time I’m in LA, I’ll meet them for lunch and just compliment them,” the director continues.

After lunch with them, Frank remembers his agent calling him and telling him that the Duffer brothers wanted him to take charge.

“I was also fascinated to know where they came from, because I had never heard of the Duffer brothers before they created this huge success on Netflix. So I had lunch with them when I was in LA, and I think about a week later my agent called me again and said they’re inviting you to come direct an episode.”

It’s worth noting that Frank directed the third and fifth episodes of the latter Stranger things season.
