In The mummy threequel, Rachel Weisz was replaced by Maria Bello. With the former making a comeback in the fourth episode, fans asked a genuine question: are the dead Chinese emperor and his terracotta army still part of the canon?
Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett hinted that this is not the case now. “Well, Rachel is in this one. That should answer the question for you.”
Elsewhere in the interview with EWthe duo recalled how they got the job to direct The Mummy 4.
William Sherrick, a producer with whom they worked on several projects, told them about the project.
Gillet and Bettinelli recalled their initial reaction to the offer, saying, “That would be damned crazy. There’s no way William is going to pull it off.”
However, it turned out that the duo was given the opportunity to direct The mummy 4.
“Basically, we’re finishing ‘Abigail,’ and we’re meeting with Dave Coggeshall, the writer, and we’re drafting a pitch,” Gillett said.
However, he also pointed out that he and his co-director have worked in the industry too long to know how volatile things are in the field.
“We’ve been doing this kind of work long enough to know that nothing is real until it’s very, very real. It’s all speculative and it feels great to give energy to really beautiful ideas.”
So if the project didn’t get a full green light, they said, they were approaching it with caution.
“But we’ve learned to keep those opportunities at bay a little bit because it’s just easy to get your heart broken.”
The mummy 4 debuts in theaters on May 19, 2028.
