Tyson Fury has opened up about a deeply personal loss that came just days before what he described as the ‘fight of his life’ in 2024.
In the second season of At home with the FurysThe heavyweight boxer, 37, recalled how he instinctively knew something was wrong with his wife, Paris Fury, 36, before learning she had suffered a miscarriage six months into her pregnancy.
Fury was in a training camp abroad ahead of his fight against Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia when Paris opted not to attend. That’s when Fury sounded the alarm.
“A pack of wild horses couldn’t keep Paris away from the fighting,” he said of the mother of seven, explaining that her absence made him realize that “she lost that baby 100 percent.”
Paris later revealed that she had gone to a routine scan alone, where she was told there was no heartbeat. Since the fight was less than a week away, she chose not to tell her husband, fearing it would affect him mentally before the fight.
“I was already a long way down the road, so I thought, ‘You know what? It would be fun to find out the gender.” I went to the gender scan alone. I thought, ‘Oh yeah, it’s okay. I don’t need anyone with me, I’ve done this many times,” Paris says in the documentary.
Paris continued, “It was less than a week until his fight and I kept thinking, ‘What do I say to Tyson?’ I Facetimed him and he said, ‘Why are you in the hospital?’ I said, ‘High blood pressure, it’s fine. I’m doing well.’ And then I picked up the phone and burst into tears.”
The loss came just one day before Fury lost his WBC heavyweight title to Usyk in May 2024.
Reflecting on the moment, Fury expressed his regret at not being there for his wife. “For the first time in 20 years, I couldn’t be there for her at her most needed time and that was the upsetting thing for me,” Tyson said.
“I was abroad, in a foreign country, about to do the biggest thing of my life and I just wanted to be home for my wife.” he added.
Paris added that both experienced a similar sense of loss. “He came home and it really felt like something out of a movie. Tyson had all his belts taken from him, I had this baby taken from me and we have to bury him.”
The couple, who share seven children, have also had previous miscarriages in 2014 and 2018.
