Anna Wintour is a powerhouse in the fashion world, so when Victoria Beckham launched her fashion label in 2008, she eagerly sought her approval.
In return, the longtime, now ex-Vogue editor didn’t attend her shows for several seasons. This prompted the Spice Girl alum to redouble her efforts to get her attention.
The musician reveals this episode during a performance on Look what happens Live! when host Andy asked: “How long did it take you to get Anna Wintour’s approval and what happened when you finally got it?”
Given Anna’s huge influence in the fashion industry, her support has become a ‘must’ for Victoria’s brand, as she explains: “I really had to prove myself to the whole industry, and so did Anna.”
She continues, “So I had a few seasons where she didn’t show up. And once I proved myself, she started showing up. And she shows up every season. She’s such a smart woman. She’s so successful and she’s so respected.”
Victoria thanked the fashion icon for her support in the interview, which she said was “incredible” for her. “For her to give that stamp of approval and support me in the industry is incredible.”
In a separate interview, the Want to be you singer Anna also shared her thoughts on her entry into the design industry.
“I consider her a Spice Girl, and we admire her style and her fashion sense, but most celebrities who get involved in our world are not real designers,” she says on the website Beckham series on Netflix. “I thought maybe this was a hobby. I didn’t quite believe it.”
The 76-year-old admitted: “I was sceptical. I think we can all be a bit snobbish in the fashion world, and think this might be a side gig, but Victoria was one that proved us completely wrong.”
It is worth noting that Victoria named her fashion brand after her name.
