Viola Davis, in addition to starring in films, TV series and Broadway shows. Now she has written a new novel.
Judge Stone is a legal thriller about a black female judge presiding over a case in which a teenage girl undergoes an illegal abortion after being raped.
Davis said she drew on her own experiences with sexual violence when writing the book and the young girl character who experiences a shocking incident.
“I felt a responsibility to women who have been sexually abused and raped, especially children, as I am one of them. And what they also deserve is the truth about how it made them feel.”
In addition, Davis adds parts of her life to the story of a young girl in the novel for inspiration.
“Everything. Every bit of my story has influenced all of these characters. I feel it is my duty to honor six-year-old Viola. I can’t think about her dimples without thinking about the fact that she has always felt ugly.”
As an EGOT winner, Davis was asked in an interview with CBS whether her new book marks the start of a new career for her.
“Maybe. I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know what this chapter in my life is about, you know? Maybe write a little more, or maybe travel, you know?” She replied.
“Maybe just because I’m an ordinary person. I think I deserve that, you know? EGOT isn’t going to be on my tombstone, just put it like that. I don’t think there’s enough room, but ‘Beloved,’ there’s enough room for ‘Beloved,’ you know?”
It is worth noting that Davis co-wrote Judge Stone with James Patterson. She has previously written a memoir, Finding Me, and a children’s fiction book, Corduroy Takes a Bow.
