West Ham’s lion-hearted legend Billy Bonds dies aged 79

In a sad news received on Sunday, November 30, 2025, West Ham United legend Billy Bonds had passed away peacefully at the age of 79.

During a remarkable 21-year spell as a player, Bonds made almost 800 appearances for the Hammers, twice captaining them to FA Cup glory in 1975 and 1980.

The football legend was one of the best-loved characters ever associated with the east London club, who announced his passing with ‘deep sadness’.

“He was devoted to his family and was the most kind, loyal, selfless and loving person.” The family of the lion-hearted Billy Bonds were also in tears, as they released a statement: “We are heartbroken to announce that we lost our beloved father today and he will always be in our hearts and forever missed.”

“Dad loved West Ham United and its wonderful supporters with all his heart and cherished every moment of his time at the club. We take comfort in the knowledge that his legacy will live on forever,” Billy’s family said.

The West Ham club added: “A period of appreciation in Billy’s honor will be held before kick-off of the Premier League home match against Liverpool, and a full tribute will take place at our next home match against Aston Villa on Sunday 14 December 2025.”

The club said: “More tributes will also appear on club channels in the coming days – rest in peace, Billy, our courageous, inspirational, lion-hearted leader.”

Billy Bonds died peacefully while he slept, but the cause of death has not yet been released.
