Caden Fine was one of three junior hockey players killed Monday in a fatal crash while driving to practice with the Southern Alberta Mustangs.
The collision with a semi-truck hauling gravel on Highway 2 near Stavely claimed the lives of all three teens, according to the RCMP.
Fine, a 17-year-old forward from Birmingham, Alabama, had crossed the border from the United States to play competitive hockey in the Canadian junior system, a step many young players take to enhance their development.
He was in his first season with the Mustangs.
The team’s social media announcement noted the “unimaginable loss” and asked for privacy for the families during this difficult time.
Prime Minister Mark Carney offered his condolences on social media and said his “heart breaks for the families of the three young hockey players,” underscoring the widespread impact the tragedy has had beyond the hockey community.
