Halle Berry has maintained a close relationship with her teachers at school, such that one of them is now her children’s godmother.
In a recent conversation with The cutthe Cat lady star discussed the powerful life lesson she still lives by and learned in her fourth grade after moving to an all-white school in Cleveland, Ohio.
The 59-year-old actress began: “I had a teacher, Yvonne Sims – she is still a good friend and godmother to both of my children – who was one of the only two black teachers in the school.”
Halle, mother of son Maceo-Robert (12) and daughter Nahla (17), continued: “She made me understand early on that nothing happens to you; it happens to you.”
“If you don’t take responsibility for your part, you will make the same mistake over and over again… until you do,” the elementary school teacher advised her.
For those unfamiliar, Halle welcomed her daughter with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry and shares Maceo-Robert with ex-husband Olivier Martinez.
During a June 2025 interview on Today with Jenna & Friends, Halle talked about her teenage daughter going to college.
The proud mom said, “She’s 17. She’s going to a college summer program, the college she hopes to go to next year. She’s going away to the college summer program this year.”
Jenna Bush Hager responded: “So you’re almost there! Is that wild?”
Halle responded, “That’s true, but I’m not one of these moms who thinks, ‘Oh, she’s leaving.’ Yes, should I be concerned? Of course. But am I happy that she’s starting her life and finding out who she’s going to become? Absolutely. I’m excited to see who she’ll be and what she’ll do and what she’ll discover.”
