Mark Ruffalo is part of a Hollywood group opposing the near-takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount.
During a Senate hearing chaired by Cory Booker (D-New Jersey), the Marvel star denounced the deal, saying it could “destroy” cinema and television, not to mention the news media.
“We don’t have to watch ‘Citizen Kane’ or read ‘1984’ to understand that the concentrated oligarchic control this merger represents is a threat to the free press, an informed populace and democracy itself,” the Hulk star said.
The merger of WBD and Paramount will put jobs at risk
Furthermore, Ruffalo has sounded the alarm, claiming that the merger, if it goes ahead, will jeopardize jobs in the sector.
“The merger threatens more than our livelihoods,” he added. “It threatens one of the most vital industries in the world.”
The deal, the actor said, comes “at the worst possible time” for the industry, as industry jobs are shrinking, prompting the actor to warn, “I can personally say that Los Angeles is hanging by a thread right now.”
Ruffalo is part of 3,000 film and TV industry members who previously wrote an open letter opposing the Paramount-Warner Bros deal. Discovery.
